A Message from the Publisher, May 24, 2006

Perhaps the most important, and most contentious, political issue of the year – one that may have a particularly strong impact on the 2006 congressional elections – is immigration reform. With an estimated 11-12 million illegal migrants already living and working in the United States, most Americans seem to agree that, as President Bush has stated, America has lost control of its borders – and, therefore, that at least some type of reform is needed. Beyond that, though, there is absolutely no consensus of opinion – even on the definition of the word “reform.” The American people are divided on the subject. So are both of the two major U.S. political parties and the unelected and unappointed political pundits who pontificate with such solemn certitude, on that and other topics, through the nation’s print and broadcast media.   DomPrep Journal had a strong and abiding interest in the subject of immigration reform, I am proud to say as the magazine’s publisher, long before it became a matter of political controversy, and even before publication of our first issue (in early January 2005). The reason is or should be obvious: Throughout history it has been proven, time after time, that any nation that does not have control of its borders can easily be invaded by foreign armies, by criminals of all types, and – in recent years, particularly – by terrorists. Undoubtedly the best known of DPJ’s Channel Master, Dr. Neil Livingstone, an internationally respected authority on terrorism, counterterrorism, domestic preparedness, and various related fields, has touched on the subject of illegal immigration in several of his always cogent articles. His 8 February 2006 article, for example, on the need for, and feasibility of, building a true “wall” – i.e., a combination physical/technological barrier of some type – extending the length of the U.S. land border with Mexico elicited favorable emails and phone calls from appreciative readers, including several senior U.S. government officials, from throughout the United States. (For new readers, and for those who may have missed it at the time, a link to that article is provided below.) Despite the considerable, and somewhat belated, attention now being given to the subject by the nation’s mass media, and by those members of the U.S. House and Senate who are running for election (or re-election) this year, it is far from certain that any meaningful immigration-reform legislation will be passed by the current Congress. Nonetheless, it is DPJ’s intent to continue, and probably expand, its own coverage of the numerous complex issues involved in this topic of such major importance to all Americans. In doing so, we may occasionally include our own opinions, but our more important goal is to provide DPJ’s readers with the facts they need to form their own knowledgeable opinions. Your comments on immigration reform, and on such other important topics as pandemic influenza – the two articles on that subject in this issue complement and expand upon ten earlier articles and reports – will be much appreciated.

As always. Sincerely,

Marty
