GAO Report: Combating Nuclear Terrorism - Actions Needed to Better Prepare to Recover from Possible Attacks Using Radiological or Nuclear Materials

A terrorist’s use of a radiological dispersal device (RDD) or improvised nuclear device (IND) to release radioactive materials into the environment could have devastating consequences. The GAO (Government Accountability Office) was asked to examine: (a) the federal government’s responsibilities and/or plans to assist cities & states with the cleanup process of contaminated areas; (b) what is known about the effectiveness of the cleanup process; and (c) suggestions for improving federal preparedness to help cities & states recover from such incidents. http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d10204.pdf
